Comparable to 'Come + See'-maybe even better.

What an amazing film.Emotionally exhausting like the better known "Come & See" but although not as graphic the pain and anguish of the two main charcaters is unremmitting-stunning acting performances all round actually and the ending in particular is a masterpiece.Beautifilly shot in b/w and filmed in 4/3 .Think it`s only available on a US dvd boxset-really needs and deserves a separate dvd release.

"Come and See" is like being shell-shocked, whereas "The Ascent" is a slow, grueling drain of your emotions. Both f^ck you up big time.

That was a perfect description in my opinion.

When the choice is between a American and a Russian film, always choose the latter.

It was surprisingly evident how much Klimov must've been influenced by his wife's earlier masterpiece. During the screening I couldn't resist a silent chuckle to myself: "Wow, the missus did it first!"
