Anchor Bay needs to get their hands on this one and give it the transfer it deserves.

I think MGM (Sony) has the rights don't they? Maybe one of their future MIDNITE MOVIES releases.

Don't let your expectations get too high - although it is a creepy and disturbing movie, it isn't extreme and overwhelming.

I will always remember my parents coming back from the theater and saying this was the scariest movie they had ever seen. They described the trombone scene, as well as a scene with some girl running through stalks of corn. Mom said that the scariest thing was the sound of the Phantom breathing through the hood. I've always wanted to see it; just haven't been able to find it locally (In Utah - go figure....)

I would like to see a dvd of this movie too. To me, the scariest thing about the movie is that it is based on true crimes. It drove home the fact that there really are people like that out there. When I was a kid this was inconceivable, and it really scared me.
We should find out who owns the rights to it and lobby them to put out a dvd.

I saw it at Fort Hood (how ironical) back in'78 . It was extremely disturbing. Wonder if this guy was a WWII vet that may have been badly affected by the war. Who knows? It was creepy at night time at Fort Hood, that's for sure.

reply

Wow--I didn't know there was so much interest in this movie! I just stumbled across this message board. I knew one of the people involved in the production of the film who convinced a friend and I to play small roles in one scene. I think I have some extra footage around somewhere. Maybe I can help put together a DVD.

God, I would love to see a DVD of this movie. A very high quality DVD with lots of extras. I would also like to see a big budget horror made based on this movie. I saw this movie when I was in elementary school. My uncle rented it for my cousins and me. I don't think he realized what he was renting because he also rented one of the Faces of Death movies. I remember all of us sitting in the living room, watching these creepy movies and sometimes he would tell us to put our hands over our eyes. Ha! I remember this movie being very creepy. I am from the area, too, and 1946 is when my parents were born. I was born the year this movie came out.

i agree this movie needs to be released on dvd.i have the vhs , i found it at a goodwill store in st.cloud fl.

reply

I also agree. The film was originally released on Beta and VHS but that's where it stands for now I believe. I taped it off HBO or Cinemax or whatever it was shown on. The first time I saw it was at the theater.

reply

there is a DVD version. I bought mine on ebay.

reply

And it's 'bootlegged' too so you got 'gypped'.

Sorry, no official DVD release yet, if ever. For those who want the film 'legitimately' look for the old WHV clamshell VHS.

A friend of our family was involved in the production of this film. I'm going to ask him about a possible DVD--I don't think an official one has been released yet. I know he has extra footage of much of the film. He actually convinced me and a friend to play small roles in one scene.

I remember watching outtakes of the trombone killing scene and a couple of others at one point.
