Despite the level of grittiness and the number of NYers involved, the movie does not feel like a NY movie - the characters are too rootless, too disconnected - too unhinged. This feels like LA, not NY. The only scenes that have an authentically NY vibe are those of him driving around Times Square.

Believe it or not, there are millions of rooted, connected, hinged people in Los Angeles. Forget the anti-L.A. propaganda myths you have been indoctrinated with in New York.

I've lived in LA for 20 years. NY it ain't.
