Travis Breaking The Television?

What was the significance of this scene? I believe Martin Scorsese had it there for a reason.

He's watching a romantic relationship, something he doesn't (and probably won't ever) have. Same reason he's upset while watching the American Bandstand show. There's a bunch of couples dancing and having a good time, he's not one of them.

I'd love to see you in the moonlight with your head thrown back and your body on fire.

Plus, both of these TV events happened after his being rejected by Betsy.

well said, pretty obvious I thought :)

There was a sappy romantic couple on tv so he broke it.

The way I took it was that the woman was talking about leaving or not loving him and Travis thought of her as another of the whores and low-lifes and 'destroyed' her by kicking the TV over. It seemed like it was sort of the last bit that put him over the edge.

Didn't he break the television accidentally?

reply

The couple on the TV were talking about a divorce. The woman was leaving her husband for another man who she loved. The Man was telling her not to go cause he loved her.

He didn't intentionally break the TV. He obviously wasn't happy and was just fidgeting by moving it with his feet, and pushed it slightly too far by mistake. Others in this thread have already covered what Travis was viewing on the TV and how he must've felt but the significant part to me was how he reacted after breaking his TV, as it is represented his life spiraling out of control.

He was watching some sort of romance show when he broke the television. I think this symbolized his empty love life. He was just disgusted by watching other people in love, seeing that his love life was non-existent. And plus, I think he was just sick of seeing all the superficiality on tv as well. His mind was in a dark place.

It symbolizes him snapping point.
