Wow this was... nothing

And please don't give me the "message" thing... I did not perceive this as having negative comments about the American society (then again who knows, I'm European and maybe the Americans would see it differently). The "message" was as pretty straightforward, and let me put it in the simplest of ways: no pain, no gain. In other words, once an idiot, always an idiot. Even since the beginning, when this guy is told to stop drinking and he is making cretin jokes, you simply feel that this will go nowhere.

Let's not get complicated, let's not talk about deep stuff, the intricacies of life, etc. because this movie has nothing to do with them. That is, unless you really need to see those things - but then, you would see them anywhere. However, that would make one fall into the mistake of "when you have a hammer, all things look like nails". In this case I could point you such things in a porno flick.

On the bright side, the movie is somewhat realistic - I know a person similar to the main character - which saves it and qualifies it for a 2/10.

By the way, I don't think the chicken is dancing per se, I think it's an editing gimmick (i.e. the right music put on those moves).

I hope you enjoyed it... if you haven't enjoyed it yet, well, DON'T!! If you really want to look smart watching an European film, try some other.

I think you dismissed the film too quickly.

PyroBurns. Understatement.

I don't know if I see it differently because I'm an American. It's definitely not a movie that I want to watch again anytime soon - it really takes its toll on your sanity. That said, it was extremely well put together and I liked it a lot for what it was, though it made me feel depressed and I think I drank a whole lot after watching it.

did it really make you need to drink?

Now that's film making!

Ingmar Bergman's movies are about at that level for me- just way too intense.

But for me Herzog feels like home : )

Stroszek´s message was not "once an idiot, always an idiot".

And the chicken dance was not an editing gimmick.

I think you didn't get the message!

Haha. Beyond being a really funny and ignorant quote, this also nullifies any prior statements about the movie by the OP just based on sheer intelligence. The irony, oh the irony.

My thoughts exactly.

Stroszek is a brilliantly developed fictional character, the acting, the story (his story), it was depicted in the film so moving and realistically.

Of course, he is not a genius, he is an alcoholic, a no-good for society. And his story is rather simple but still - FASCINATING.

And if you are a yank or not - doesn't matter. This film is a gem, it's moving, it offers highest art quality, it's simply beautiful. So no "maybe the Americans would see it differently" - you didn't get it!

And btw. if you regard this film to be too simple for your taste then what else do you enjoy watching, documentaries about physics? I don't understand your attitude.

The movie was about life in this society being *beep* everywhere, the american dream not existing, people craving some kind of connection.
