John Norman Howard kind of Jim Morrison-like?

is Kristofferson's role loosely based on Jim Morrison? he certainly has the look and the alcoholism

Not saying you aren't correct, but seems like alcoholism was the least of Morrison's problems. Although less booze might have reduced his obsession with seeing "'IT' in the spotlight"!

You'd think he could have just gone out during sound check to get it out of his system!

I'm watching it now and I would say he definitely resembles Morrison in more ways then one. The hair and beard, the drinking, his clothes, even the way he holds the microphone when he sings, I can go on.. I think it was definitely what they were going for.

Yes, and the screenwriter (one of them) Joan Didion was very familiar with Jim Morrison, having interviewed him for a famous article in the late 60s. Kristofferson's black leather/Navajo concha belt is a direct visual reference to the way Jim dressed in his Lizard King persona.

But I also see elements of Dennis Wilson, who rode a motorcycle onstage at least once, and of course was a notorious hellraiser yet also a tender-hearted romantic.

His pants in the first concert scene are like Jim's also. I definitely see the resemblance, the biggest difference being that Jim only lived to 27.

I see no remembrance since Jim was handsome and a great singer, and K.K. warbles his speaking-songs.
