Funny how the 're-make' didn't live up to its hype!

It flopped... and everyone has STOP talking about it. Haha!
Sorry to sound so negative, [props to actors and the Geat Whitney Houston], but a "re-make" of Sparkle should have never been made.

The original SPARKLE stands the test of time!

The original Sparkle is only at 13% in Rotten tomatoes which means it had horrible critic reviews. And it didn't make a dent at the box office.

The remake is at 58% in Rotten tomatoes which means it got more good reviews than bad ones. It also grossed over 24 million dollars, meaning 3 million tickets sold, which is very respectable.

So you were saying? The remake is 100 times better. The first one was a bad film with bad lighting, bad editing, bad script, many characters underdevelopped, but sure it still had it's charm and nostalgia. But the remake is a much superior movie and a much more successful one.

Both versions flopped. Neither is a good movie (though I'd argue the remake is marginally better put together, its story is still insipid and lopsided, and then there's the music). And "Sparkle" was never some "unremarkable" classic - it's no AFI-recommended classic of any kind ,and plenty of those get remade every year.

Something about the remake seemed overly glossy and fake to me. The original was low-budget and looked it, but it felt gritty and real, and the characters seemed more real. The remake just looked expensive and Hollywood-ized.

The remake was by no means an expensive movie, at least as Hollywood studio films go. I felt like the characters in the remake actually had personalities versus the cardboard cutouts in the original. Not much about that original felt "real" to me.

I liked the original better, I loved the remake as well though. But the original film just like most films, the people seemed more like people you will see walking down the street in real life and so did the scenery. It's just like the original "Carrie" and the remake version, the people might have been more made up and the whatever but the original just seemed more real.

"Don't they know they're making love to one already dead?!"

Love Les Miserables!!!

Thee 1970's were all about grit. Until Lucas and Spielberg both ushered in the blockbuster era, and all that went away. Most everything since has been overly polished and less realistic, even when lower budget.
