Which is better?

...the original or the remake of Sparkle?

It depends on what you're into really.

The original is much more gritty and raw than the remake. Its almost like a different film.

With the remake the family actually live a nice middle class life and a has a colored TV(something that was a luxury in that time).

I dont wanna give too much away because I dont wanna spoil the remake (or original for that mater) for anyone who hasnt seen it yet.

Go check it out yourself. Its a great film and Carmen Ejogo(Sister) shines in it. The whole cast gav a solid performance.

The original rates as a D+, the remake a C+. The remake is better, but neither picture is good. A lot of good elements and scenes (the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts in either case) in each, and of course great songs, but the biggest problem in both is the titular character - she's almost a complete wash. When the film (either of them) shifts focus to Sparkle in the third act, it loses much of its steam.

At least Jordin Sparks didn't have to parade on stage in that unfortunate Technicolor red fish-fin gown with the gigantic bow looking like a leftover Christmas present. Poor Irene Cara, lol...

The original is, by far, the superior film of the two. Although, I did enjoy Dolores' expanded role in the remake. Carmen Ejogo was really good as Sister, but Lonette McKee's Sister was phenominal!
