Modern day music sucks!

I hate all the new bands, most of the bands i like are ten years old are more, the only recent band i like at the moment is wolfmother. All the other bands i like include, led zeppelin, wolfmother, red hot chilli peppers, guns n roses, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, AC/DC, Metallica, Nirvana, the darkness there are a few i prob missed. Music these days is soo fake, its all done in a studio and digitilised so that it sounds perfect, groups i really dislike at the moment include.. green day, ashlee simpson, All rap and hip hop music i could go on but i think youve heard enough.

I don't agree with the blanket statement "modern day music sucks", but what intrigues me is that when it comes to the modern popular music scene--the stuff that dominates the charts, the stuff that most high school and college kids are into, etc.--fans no longer seem to be interested in musicianship and creativity in musicianship. (I'm not saying that no one cares about this, or that there are no good bands/artists around, I'm just referring to mainstream, popular stuff).

Most current popular music stars are not known for their musicianship. Although there has always been a percentage of pop stars that weren't known for their musicianship, there was also a large percentage that was known for that by the mid 1960s and throughout the early 1990s, including, of course, Led Zeppelin. (And earlier eras, like the popular jazz eras, also had many stars primarily known for musicianship.) Modern popular music fans do not seem to care about how well their favorite artists and groups can play an instrument. They don't seem to care whether they write music with interesting melodies, chord progressions and song structures.

When I was in grade school (thoughout the 1970s and early 1980s), there were a lot of kids who played some instrument or another. They were often either in bands outside of school or they played in one of the school bands. They almost always cared about the musicianship of popular music. They also spent time educating their non-musician friends about that kind of stuff (not that all of the musicians agreed on what counted as good musicianship, of course, but they were interested in it at least a bit). What happened to that situation? Do kids in grade school not play instruments any longer, or do they not think that people doing creative and skillful things with instruments is more interesting than people not doing that? It doesn't make sense to me, and every time I hear a new popular song that hardly has any harmonic progression or melody, or every time I hear a new guitar-oriented band that's just playing the same old 4/4, three-chord (I, IV, V or something similar), ABABCB kinda-songs, I find it pretty depressing. What happened to creativity, inventiveness, and experimentation in popular music?

Thats what im saying BrandtSponseller. The reason i got into all these bands and dont like modern day music is because the first band i ever got into was metallica, im a huge fan of the electric guitar and so a friend recomended me looking up 100 best guitar solos, the first album i bought from that list was and justice is for all, which has an awsome solo from the song One. From this i started looking into the 70's - 80's era and found such bands as led zepellin, van halen, jimi hendrix etc. I just feel as though music these days are not instrumentally influenced, the lead singer is now the most important person in the band were before it was the lead guitarist or drummer etc. I do like wolfmother at the moment who are very recent been around for about a year, they are very unike for this era and sound great instramentally. Out of all people i know i was the first person too recognise them and like them, now theyve become quite popular here in Aus not sure how its like for them in the states but i heard they did well on their recent tour there, so who knows maybe more bands like this will come.

What about Jet?

It seems to me that you gotta dig a little deeper into music, into that dank and sometimes scary realm of indie rock that began to spring up in the late 70's and has gone on strong since. Your bound to find some new bands that you will love, even in this troubled modern age. Nirvana, besides rising from this sub genre, encouraged their new found listeners to check out the forgotten and overlooked bands. Seeing as how you list them as one of your favorite bands, it might be time you heed their advice.

What really amazes me is that some teens misinterpretate rock music.

well what about guys like jack white...i think the guy is a genius..dont necessarily like the white stripes but i still think that he is an awesome musician.

and i really think the strokes are unique. and regina spektor.

just because you like led zeppelin, which of couse is the cliche classic rock band, dosnt mean that everyuthing else that is newer sucks.

bob dylan is still around and so is U2.

do they both suck now that they are "modern"?

reply

The fact that modern day rock bands imitate Led Zeppelin isn't Led Zeppelin's fault. They liked making music and thats what they did. They didn't do it so other bands could imitate them.

I hope you see that I was referring to Spanish Caravan88's comment.

Plus I hope you misspelled Drummer on accident and not on purpose.

I enjoy most types of music, from Michael Jackson to Megadeath and so on. All have something to give.

Personally, I think that music today is too synthesised. This is why Ive gone off a lot of Michael Jackson's music and also off a lot of modern music.

The likes of Wolfmother, Joss Stone and, to a lesser extent, Sandi Thom are a breath of fresh air. Not quite the heady days of, what I call, PURE music of the 1970's and back, but a decent step in the right direction.

well, i don`t like the modern day music, too. the crap of emo-pseudo-rock bands and hip-hop retards is more than unbeareble, i miss the old days of rock, when Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, Black Sabbath ruled the Charts. I like the proggressive rock of bands like ELP, Genesis (with peter gabriel) or King Crimson. Pink Floyd is just amazing. Prog is so intelligent, it outranks mostly everything that is aired on radio today. but the band wolfmother rebirthed my faith in music, they forced me to look more intenseively for other good music, thats not older than a decade. i found mogwai and Amplifier, a band that i would highly recommend you all to listen, because they are awesome. heavy, but intricate, intelligent and hard-rocking. maybe they are not very accessible at the beginning, but at least the first album kicks ass!

"there is nothing Cliche about Led Zeppelin"...

um I love them but yes there is. so many of their songs are based on blues cliches. but cliches aren't bad.

this whole modern day music sucks thing, it's been said every decade by people who don't explore music enough. usually it's by lazy people who just listen to the big name bands on the radio or on some magazine cover and then go and judge the whole modern day music from these few bands. Mainstream music for the most part, excluding the 50's and 60's in rock has pretty much sucked. And I am talking about what is played on the top 40 and popular stations. look beyond the radio and MTV and find other bands. there are a lot of bands out there that don't suck, same as every decade.

There is nothing that Led Zepp did that is incredibly ORIGINAL, they blended a lot of styles, mainly folk and blues, but that again is nothing original, but they were still great.

It depends on what you are looking for in music I guess, what attracts you. but stop being so lazy and explore.
