LOTR and Zeppelin

I've heard lots of people talk about LOTR and Led Zeppelin. It's no seceret that the band was a big fan of J.R. Tolken and his novels. But how many songs from Zeppelin are of reference to LOTR?

Battle of Evermore is an obvious choice, so is Ramble on and misty mountain hop. Can anyone else think of some?

As a pretty big LOTR fan, I concur with that statement. One can find alot of things that could be interpretted as LOTR references.

reply

So many people have tried to interpret the lyrics of "Stairway", but to me and a lot of other Zep/LOTR fans, the song just screams Lord of the Rings. (Especially the Battle of Helm's Deep.)

IMMIGRANT SONG is very much like LOTR.

reply

Ramble On makes a reference to Gollum, and The Battle of Evermore is a reference to a battle in Return of the King

reply

The Battle of Evermore is NOT about LOTR. It makes a reference to ringwratihs, but the song isn't about LOTR. It's about a battle long ago in Scotland.

reply

Not really... It's about the Battle of Armageddon; it mocks religion.

Most of the mentioned songs can be both about Lord Of The Rings or religion, it just depends on how you look at it.

ps: Stairway To Heaven isn't about a girl on heroine, it's about Lucifer's female consort. "then the Piper will lead us to Reason" refers to how Lucifer will convert 'them' - he was a 'musical' being.

As a teenager back in the seventies I loved "Lord of the Rings" and I loved Led Zeppelin. And "Ramble On" was one of my favorite songs.

But then I actually figured out the lyrics. And was I appalled!

'twas in the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair
but Gollum and the Evil One
crept up and slipped away with her
away with her, yeah...

C'mon gang, admit it. No matter how much you love Zep and/or LotR, that lyric conjures up the lamest image ever. Gollum and a big disembodied eye scamming a hot babe out from under Robert Plant. From then on, I started referring to "Ramble On" as "The Lord of the Rings Stole My Girlfriend."

I still love Zeppelin, but many of their songs are better if you don't quite decipher what they're about.

reply

hahaha, thats gold! i never thought those lyrics through before, you certainly paint a hilarious picture

"that lyric conjures up the lamest image ever. Gollum and a big disembodied eye scamming a hot babe out from under Robert Plant"

it was only the peter jackson version where sauron was a big eye but in the book it was metaphorical in that he can see all in reality he was in barad-dur in some non-described form

"i kick arse for the lord"

Wordage.

Plus "the lady who shines white light" in Stairway is a reference to Galadriel.

immigrant song is based on norse mythology. as was lotr. thus the connection

The Lord of the Rings, obviously, had a few impacts on Plant's song writing. Rings probably had an impact on Plant's intrest in folklore and mythology, which is also quite obvious in his songwriting. Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever. Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist, no contest. Bonzo, best drummer. Robert Plant, best rock and roll singer. John Paul Jones, the most underrated musician ever to exist ever. Lord of the Rings, the greatest fantasy novels or fantasy anything ever produced. It's like having cookies with milk, absolutely brilliant.

Now I'm NOT SAYING IT'S A DIRECT REFERENCE but No Quarter reminds me of LOTR in some ways. Don't start arguments about it though, I'm just saying it REMINDS me of it. It's epic and original, dark and beautiful, much like LOTR. But I'm not saying LOTR was a direct influence cos it probably wasn't. It just reminds me of it.

Back when I was a teenager and big into Zep and Tolkein, "No Quarter" immediately reminded me of LOTR the first time I heard it. There may not be any direct references, although those howling winds and "They carry news that must get through/To build a dream for me an you" certainly evoked LOTR.

In relation to this topic, I always thought that Robert Plant would have made a great Gandolph in the movie!

reply

Robert Plant absolutely should have been a wizard in The Lord of the Rings! But he'd have to sing every spell he cast;

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
in the ranks of death you'll find him.

His father's sword he has girded on,
and his wild harp slung behind him.

"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
though all the world betrays thee.
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!
