Name your favorite westerns.......NOBODY under 50 need answer!

I'm waiting........

I forgot to put THE SHOOTIST on my list! Amazingly, this film on the surface seems like a downbeat, depressing character study, but I find it highly entertaining from beginning to end.

*Solidly acted and paced scenes that don't drag on too long

*Finely drawn characters that move the story along

*Moments of sadness and tenderness that stick with the viewer long after they've seen them

*And a timeless performance by John Wayne. Most films that actors do at the end of their careers and lives are pretty unwatchable, but this is the greatest example of an actor in his last film that is completely watchable!

I'm not a big fan of Wayne, but this is an exceptional film, with great performances by all. Your original list is pretty good, too. Very glad to see that you don't have any spaghetti westerns on the list. Also, very glad to see that you have ' The Ox-Bow Incident ' on your list. It's my favorite western and one of my ten favorite films. It's so good that I literally become emotional when I think or talk about it occasionally. Hey, what about ' Shane ' or
' Liberty Valance '? Did you forget about those or not just that big of a fan of them?

I'm 59 and my favorites are (in no particular order):

- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
- Monty Walsh (Jack Palance version)
- Quigley Down Under (well, sort of a Southern Western)
- Silverado
- Broken Trail
- Lonesome Dove
- The Alamo (John Wayne version)
- True Grit
- Open Range
- The Shootist
- The Quick and the Dead
- Unforgiven
- The Cowboys
- Rooster Cogburn
- Red River
- High Noon
- The Cheyenne Social Club
- Winchester '73
- Broken Arrow
- The Man From Laramie
- The Westerner
- 3:10 to Yuma (both versions)
- Any Lone Ranger movie with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels

Is that enough?

reply

While I'm under 50 (19), but I'll answer anyway, my current top 5 (it changes all the time)...

The Searchers (one of my favorite movies)
High Noon
The Magnificent Seven
Shane
For a Few Dollars More/ Rio Bravo/ The Shootist

reply

Good choices. The only one I wouldn't pick would be FAFDM, because I don't care for spaghetti westerns. 'Shane' and 'The Shootist' are two of my very favorites. Have you seen 'The Ox-bow Incident'? That's my favorite western. In fact, it's one of my ten favorite films of all time. Thanks for responding to my question.

reply

1. BIG JAKE starring John Wayne, Patrick Wayne, and Christopher Mitchum.

2. EL DORADO: starring John Wayne, James Caan, and Robert Mitchum (Chris' dad).

3. THE SHOOTIST: starring John Wayne, Lauren Bacall, and Ron Howard.

4. THE UNDEFEATED: starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson.

5. OPEN RANGE: starring Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner.

6. THE GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL: starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster.*

7. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY: starring Clint Eastwood.

8. THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: starring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen.

9. THE STALKING MOON: starring Gregory Peck and Eva Marie Saint.

10. DUEL AT DIABLO: starring James Garner, Sidney Poitier, and Dennis
Weaver.

*It might not be historically accurate. But, the eponymous gun battle was still awesome; the theme song by Frankie Lane is a classic; and one of the Earp brothers was played by a pre-STAR TREK DeForest Kelly! You've got to love it for that.

Thanks for your list. I like some of your choices; #s 3, 5, 8 and 9. I'm not a big fan of spaghetti westerns. I'm also not a big fan of John Wayne, however I would like to give you some suggestions of some films of his that I do like a lot. When you get a chance check out Stagecoach, Angel and the Badman, Red River, The Horse Soldiers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Shootist. Other favorites of mine are Shane, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Cowboy, The Magnificent Seven, Pale Rider, My Darling Clementine, Lawman and my all time favorite western, The Ox-bow Incident. If you're able to try to check out what I feel is the best western television series ever, Have Gun-Will Travel. It plays on the Encore Western Channel everyday. Happy hunting and get back to me and let me know if you've seen any of my suggestions.

Wow i just ordered like half of what you listed you have really good taste. Oh i have a question about the shootist i asked on the john wayne board but not one has answered. See i have issuse with films showing in detail some one dieing of cancer i know it sounds strange but i do. So does the film only metion that he has it a few times or do the show lots of details about it? Thanks for the list and the help take care. Oh and i saw the outlaw josey wales and that is a class act movie the only thing i dislike about it is sondra locke but other than that its a great movie.

I HAVE TO RETURN SOME VIDEOTAPES

reply

No, the film doesn't really dwell on the subject of his character having cancer. It isn't really a rip-roaring action western, if that's what you're looking for. Everything about it is handled very subtly. It has a really good message. It's actually my favorite Wayne western. It's very different from any other western he made. Enjoy!

P.S. I actually met Sondra Locke back in the eighties. She was very nice; kind of serious, though. I guess you know that Eastwood and Locke were together for several years. She was in a few of his films. Not a bad actress, although I guess that you didn't care for her.

reply

Wow you met Sondra Locke thats awsome nice to hear she was nice in person. I think it was the person she played and how it was wrote in Josey Wales more than her acting that annoyed me. I love here in Sudden Impact though she was really good in that. I enjoy the slower and more subtle films alot i prefer well written story's i mean i like nonstop action but i think story's are more important. I dont get youth today they cant enjoy good movies with good storys hell most movies made in the 60's and 70's are better than alot of what is made today. I mean if you pair good action story and acting together you have a great movie now its just how big can that fireball be?

Have you ever seen Leon The Professional that is a great film that pair's good character and story and great action too. My one and only standard when it comes to an action movie is it has to have a good finale. There has to be a good action scene at the end. But thats it i mean i use to be one of thouse kids that could not sit still during a slow moving movie but not i love the slower ones the focus on story and character. I started watching dramas and focus on the story more than the action. Though if you have a crappy story you better have some good action to carry the film. But thats the only time i think a movie really needs lots of action.

I mean i like transformers type of movies but i hold it to a far lower standard. You cant talk about transformers and the shawshank redemption in the same breath. Movies like Dirty Harry are just not made any more and we also dont have the same caliber of actors for those roles i cant name a single actor today that could play that role. Not to say we dont have good actors today but movie tough guys are a thing of the past. Wow this was a long post take care
