The book was much more taut and suspenseful. After the initial shooting, the build up to the climax is leaner and more suspenseful. When the fecal matter hits the fan at the end, it is much more cathartic.
(SPOILER AHEAD). The paperback edition of the book I read was very cleverly designed. When the protagonists get to where they think they might meet their antagonists, the right hand page ends with one of the protagonists firing across the creek, just to see if the rival group of hunters are out there somewhere. You turn the page and suddenly the rival group of hunters have come up pretty much out of nowhere, opening up with everything but the kitchen sink. That part of the movie was pretty much like the book. When I turned that page and all hell broke loose, mentally my reaction was "Holy God!" or something like that. When I saw the movie in a theater, someone exclaimed "OH SH/T!!!"
