Hasn't this marvelous example of 70's trash cinema made it to DVD yet?

Well, it ought to be by now! Those who forget the past are condemned to ... well, watch bad Nic Cage films, I guess.

It's been released on Region 1 DVD from Shout! Factory as part of the four film box set Action-Packed Movie Marathon, Volume Two. Unfortunately, it's an edited-for-TV print that removes Connie's nudity.

That's great news about the Shout Factory DVD, but bad news about the edits. I assume this was the best (or only) print available?

It seems I watched this nugget on cable in the late '70s, but I don't remember much of it.

reply

Maybe so, but it's nonetheless both shocking and disappointing that the usually reliable Shout! Factory fumbled the ball by releasing a cut version of this film. I honestly expected more from them than that, especially since the DVD box lists that it's R-rated at 98 minutes long when it's actually just 94 minutes due to the edits. Plus the print looks pretty murky as well.

That's very surprising for Shout Factory, which generally takes great pains to get to the original source.

How are the other films in that set? I think I might have "Bulletproof" with Gary Busey, but I don't have "Bamboo Gods & Iron Men" or "Trackdown." The latter looks like the most interesting to me after "Scorchy."

Still, this is a pretty random collection. I would love if Shout Factory did a mega-box set of drive-in fare from the '70s.

I haven't checked on the other films yet. Reportedly, "Trackdown" is also a cut version. More recently, Shout! Factory has issued two Cult Movie Marathon box sets of films like Chatterbox!, The Naked Cage, Invasion of the Bee Girls, The Devil's Eight, Unholy Rollers, and Angels from Hell. Eight movies altogether, with two films per disc. They all are uncut prints, although the quality of the transfers varies from film to film.

Thanks for the details. I don't mind if the transfer quality isn't perfect as long as the film is uncut and widescreen (or whatever ratio it was originally released in).

I've heard of a few of those films, but I believe the only one I have is "Invasion of the Bee Girls," which is a decent "Bee" movie.

Just watched "Trackdown" and it's uncut. It's a pretty taut and gripping little 70's action thriller that exposes the seedy underbelly of 70's Los Angeles in all its icky glittery glory. The print overall is in sound shape, although some of the nighttime scenes are too dark and murky, which makes it a bit hard to figure out precisely what's going in said nighttime scenes.

Thanks for the update on "Trackdown," Woodyanders. It sounds like a lot of sleazy fun – which is the best kind.

It's hard to make out the dialogue in a lot of those grindhousy films because of the poor production qualities, so it's probably a problem with the source material.

I still find a lot of these obscurities on VHS in the budget bins of thrift stores, so I'm not inclined to buy this latest Shout Factory set unless I find it at a substantial bargain – especially if "Scorchy" is edited.

This movie is available as part of a four film box set called Action-Packed Movie Marathon, Volume 2 from Shout! Factory. The other films in said box set are Bulletproof with Gary Busey, Trackdown, and Bamboo Gods and Iron Men. Alas, it's an edited-for-TV print that removes all of Connie's nudity.
