On Youtube

I've just watched "Rogue Male" on Youtube (and "Man Hunt" is also available there).

The quality is reasonably watchable, but it was difficult to work out what device Sir Robert was fashioning when trapped underground. (Luckily I knew, from the book.)

Peter O'Toole's performance was very good; he showed real pain and anguish, whereas in lesser productions the hero would have been unbelievably stoic. John Standing did well as Quive-Smith, but it would have been impossible to match George Sanders in the 1941 version.

One might wonder why Sir Robert opted to buy and ride a tandem, thus drawing attention to himself. He didn't seem to be that far from civilisation in the form of a shop and pub. And drinking that pond water couldn't have done his insides any good - I guess, as Quive-Smith suggested, that it must have become very unpleasant being confined in the cave!

This production compared very well with the 1941 version, and we were spared the American idea of London and the feminine interest that was introduced into it.
