The sequels undermined the message of this one


It was never about winning -- it was about going the distance (a mantra, you might recall, they never repeat in any of the sequels) ... big difference.

Rocky should have quit after this one and opened a pet shop with Adrian. He had nothing left to prove.

Rocky Balboa (the sixth movie) was about that too. He didn't win the fight in that one, and he wasn't expecting to win it. He did it to show that he could still go toe-to-toe with the younger guys.
