Ending makes me cry every time

I know it's coming, I prepare myself, but without fail when that third-rate fighter does the unthinkable and goes the distance with the champ, and all he can think about is his mousy girlfriend who's running through the crowd toward him as he screams her name, and they embrace--my tears start streaming. I'm always struck by how a scene in a movie, and admittedly not a terribly original one, can evoke that kind of emotional response. Love it.

It was more original 40 years ago I'd imagine. And I've only started tearing up the last few times.

The end of part two always has me reaching for the tissues.

Why, Willie?

That's a great one, Willie.

Because Rocky had gone through so much in part two: Not being able to do TV commercials, losing most of his money, having to work at Mickey's gym doing very menial jobs, nearly losing Adrian and Junior, getting a worse beating against Creed than he did in the first fight. After enduring all of that, yet pulling off the impossible and decking the champ. When he holds up that title belt and loudly proclaims "Yo, Adrian! I DID IT!", well…(needs the tissues again)

Pretty powerful stuff, Willie. No doubt.

- I too feel strong emotions of joy from that scene. The thing is, it's so realistic, so believable. Rocky and Adrian are so deeply connected, and it's something we all long for on some level: that deep need to connect intimately with someone and overcome our self-doubt. We want Adrian and Rocky to be together, and we actually wanted Rocky to win the fight even though he doesn't care because he knows he can compete with the best - it's just so powerful, sincere, genuine - all in one brief moment.

Stallone and his team really did it right with "Rocky".

Greatest movie of all time.

RIP Roger Rees. AKA Robin Colcord.

I just re-watched all of them starting with the first, and though I never was before, I became really emotional watching 1 and 2. III on not so much though they are good movies.
Maybe I'm just at a different place in my life now being a lot older than when I first watched them back in the day.
That's a testament to how great this movie is, that it can still have that impact all these years later.

reply

Agreed, Dar. Same thing happened to me.

I thought it was a weak ending.

"I love you!" "I love YOU!" The end.

That's IT? The writing ran out of steam the last few seconds.

And Adrien stumbling through the crowd, weakly calling out "Rocky?" (as though he were milling around the crowd somewhere).

And, finally, Adrien (all 105 pounds of her) making her way through the crowd, past security, up the steps, and into the ring... Too much!

Great ending. What's the matter with it? Too chesey?

Rocky wasn't even listening to the results of the fight. He just wanted his Adrian. I can see where some might think that was corny but it tears me up every time.

I never get tired of this movie.

Me neither.

I just re-watched it and teared up at the ending myself. The whole fight had me emotional. A lot of it had to do with the music - excellent soundtrack. Also the looks from Apollo when he realizes that it's a real fight and not just a stunt anymore. And that look on his face when Rocky gets up after he knocks him down in the 14th. You could almost hear him thinking "this guy won't quit!".

I also love how they didn't use the cliche ending of Rocky beating the champ. Gutsy to go with an ending where the hero actually loses but you still get the sense that he got his victory.

Its such a tearjerker because Rocky's love for Adrian was more important than winning the title.

Love is all that matters.

" Adrian!"......."ADRIAN!!!!"

reply

I cry as well. He did what he set out to do which was go the distance. When it's over he doesn't care about the money or the title. He just wants Adrian, and we are with him while Apollo is being announced as the winner. He doesn't care about that either and neither do we. A beautiful ending.
