The real Continental Baths

I just watched this movie for the first time tonight and I loved it!

I am curious to know if the real Continental Baths in NYC were similar to the look of the fictional "Ritz" in the movie?

I know that there was a stage were they had performances in the real bath house and multiple floors, but I wonder if the floors were open and accessible through stairs or were the different floors only available by elevator?

Likewise, for the show -- I know that Bette Midler was famous for performing there -- was it only for patrons of the baths or could anyone come just for the show?
