read this before you buy the dvd

as for now you can get the pom pom girls 2 different ways. one way includes the movie "the van" and the 2nd is in a double dvd called "school daze" its got 8 movies from the 80's along with the pom pom girls. DO NOT by the "school dazed" version. for some strange reason, all the other 7 movies look great, but the pom pom girls looks horrible. the picture jumps, and you see those black squiggly lines going through the movie. so go and get the dvd that has Pom pom girls along with "the Van"

thanks for the info but the movie with 8 titles is called "school dazed" for anyone doing an ebay serch.the movie school daze is a spkie lee movie, not my liking

reply

I liked it despite it's obvious flaws. The musical numbers helped it.

I think the bad picture quality adds to the appeal. These types of movies should look grainy and old if you want to capture the 'Drive-In' feel.

reply

Boy, that's the truth. When I saw this movie at our drive-in in the 70s the print was already shot. They didn't make many prints of these films, and they would travel from drive-in to drive-in over a period of a few years. Today, there's a print for each theater so the film isn't worn out when you see it.

For extra effect, the dvd should black out once or twice for a few minutes while the projectionist changes carbons. And have lots of car horns honking during the blackout.

Thanks for the tip! I bought the Starlite one (I remember "The Van" too!). The ol' Beta copy (on this label: "VCI Command Performance") is just about worn out.

reply

I haven't watched all of the films yet in the "School Dazed 8" pack, but I should note that another one of the films in the collection, MY CHAUFFEUR, is missing one entire scene (where the couple walks through the desert). Hmmm--anyone notice any other problems with this set? The set's quality is below average based on 1/4 of the films included.

reply

i'm not surprised, the dvd was priced pretty cheap.

reply

Definitely buy the Starlite Drive In Theater version with the Van, or with the package of six additional movies (Only $20 from critic's choice video online for all eight. A bargain).

You get lots of extra old refreshment stand commercials and old cartoons to create a drive-in experience. There's even a graphic at the beginning of each movie of actually pulling into a drive-in theater.

The picture quality of the films on the Starlite DVDs, including Pom Pom Girls and Van, is crisp and excellent, as they were when they were shown at the drive-ins.
After having grown up going to drive-ins during the sixties and the seventies, the grainy picture look was not part of the experience I remember -- with a few exceptions. It was the sound quality in the window speakers that sometimes left much to be desired.

reply

I was going to get starlite version.

reply

Well go for it man, it's worth it.

reply

It is also in Drive-In Cult Classics Vol. 3 8-Movie collection. The version included there is the Starlite DVD although The Van is not part of the set. The film looks great, but the movie is so far the worst piece of crap in the set, though I haven't seen all the films yet. So far The Babysitter (1969) was the best followed by Van Nuys Buvd. (1979).

This set is well worth the $10 I paid for it.

reply

You could do worse.

I bought the version of this movie at Walmart. It was part of a 4-movie collection that included Weekend Pass, Hunk, Pom Pom Girls and The Van.

The version I've purchased seems to have been strongly censored - there is NO NUDITY - NONE! I mean the movie itself is okay, nothing to wrote home about but okay (it was fun recognizing Robert Carradine and James Gannon who played Lou Brown the manager of Major League), but I wanted to see those cheerleaders naked!

Do any of the other versions being discussed on this thread actually have nudity?

reply

The OP is right! The "SCHOOL DAZE" DVD looks like crap! Colored lines running all the way through it. Poor picture. Poor color. Jumps all the way through it. And they cut out the nude scenes! Why watch this? My old VHS version looks better. You are warned!

reply

Yep, ive learned of the School Daze DVD some time ago. It's no good, avoid it at all costs.

I just bought a couple of weeks ago the Too Cool For School box collection that includes Pom Pom Girls, The Van, Malibu Beach, along with some films from the 80's. I love this collection because some of the movies I remember seen advertised on TV back before my preteen years or when I was a teenager. I was wanting to go see such films like HUNK, My Chauffeur, Tomboy, and Weekend Pass because they advertised them on TV back in the 80's in a film trailor.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I have the film in two different sets. It's in the "Drive In Cult Classics 3" set, and the "Too Cool For School" set. The one in the TCFS set is probably the same exact one from the "School Dazed" set, and looks terrible. I also think there could be footage missing from it. The print on the "Drive In Cult Classics 3" set is pristine and scratch free. It's full screen, but still better than the print on the School Dazed and Too Cool For School sets.
