I think this movie is rated R because kids shouldn't watch movies they can't (for whatever reason) appreciate.
Not that this was MPAA's intention, but for once they were right, LOL.

I suspect that a parents group, who were extremely worried that the 'seduction' scene would lead impressionable young boys into a life of homosexuality, exerted their influence.

Actually I caught this on public TV back in 1977 or 1978 uncut. It was on at about 11:00 on a Saturday night. There was a parent's advisory warning beforehand but I ignored it:) I was only 15 or 16 but it didn't disturb me. I admit I didn't totally understand it but I was fascinated. I assumed something would be cut out but when the oral sex scene was shown I was pretty sure it was complete.
