The poor special effects work drags the movie down

I like the movie, but doesn't the effects of the bullet wounds look outdated even for 1976? It's almost like they just placed some red paint on their clothes whenever someone was shot. It looks like bland TV movie effects. I'm guessing it was done intentionally for a PG rating, but it sure stands out like a sore thumb.
