The Ending: Does Josey Survive?

I've always been intrigued by the ending as Josey rides away (to stirring theme music). What's your opinion? Does Josey die of his wounds or does he live?

Obvious ambiguity, but I'd say he died.

Lived. Too much symbolism indicating change and start of a new life.

Infections killed over 30% of those suffering gunshot wounds at that time.
So where you could survive the actual bleeding other problems come to the fore. So my heart may say yes the head says no.

I am replying to an email from 15 years ago, so need to tell you that Josey Wales discovered a time machine on his way back to the ranch and transported himself to 2023, where he had a one night stand with a transgender woman with active HIV. Unfortunately, he went back on the time machine without getting a prescription and died of aids in 1866.
