On a scale of 1 to 10, how well do you think this film has aged?

Looking back at this film, one can certainly feel hard-pressed to think this was made all in 1976. The characterization of Wales was perhaps Clint's most ambiguous and complex role at the time, when he seemed to be getting type-cast as an unstoppable badass thanks to his earlier roles. In fact, I see this as perhaps a deconstruction of his "Man with No Name" persona that made him famous in the first place.

Granted, there are some scenes, such as the final shootout, where it does come off as a very conventionally made Western, but other than that, I couldn't see how this film is in anyway, dated.

Overall, I give it a 9.

This film is in my top twenty, so as these things are measured around here, I give it a 10.

Intersting point about Clint's character here being a different take on the Man with No Name. Among his westerns, this film is essentially bookended by High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider, both of which utilize a characterization of him as the Man with No Name. Among other similarities. Wales is different, to be sure. We know where he comes from, his identity, and even have a good idea as the film closes where he is going and what he will be doing.

This is one of my favorite Westerns. It's well-written, acting is excellent and it's believable. Clint Eastwood is at his best in this platform. Yes, it's long but it never drags. Spiced with bits of humor it's also brutal in places.

Except for the near rape scene with Sandra Locke it's suitable for all family members. I give it at least an 8, maybe 8.5...
