Why the German troops needed to be so stupid? SPOILER

I do not understand why the Germans are so stupidly depicted at the final sequence. Several groups of soldiers are sent to the church plain with no protection just to be shot by the rebels who are hiding on the upper stage. If it was me commanding the German troops, I would have let them enter the church with a tank, or at least would have used a special division with tear gas and heavy shielding to reduce the casualties. Also when they attack the cellar it seems they have no plan at all but to shot aimlessly and get themselves killed clumsily. They could easily set on a fire through the ventilator by pouring petrol inside to force the rebels out; or even better destroy the outside wall with a tank and liquidate them easily. If the Germans were so clumsy and stupid, and the resistance so intelligent and strong, why the war took 6 years and why the Germans surrendered no sooner than when the USA got into the war?

This is the story of all war. You think the commanders care about the lives of their troops??!

And it wasn't just the Germans who did this. Russians, British, Americans, French, Japanese - all countries threw their troops towards the guns at different times, knowing they'd be killed. The theory is: if 'we' lose some but 'they' lose more, we 'win'. That's war. It was in 1942, it still is today.
