Wouldn't the birth/rise of the anti-Christ be a GOOD thing..?

 Looking at the bigger picture, I mean. The son of the devil has to rise to power before the second coming... You'd think that all those priests, etc., would be tripping all over each other trying to protect the boy so that the prophecy could be fulfilled.

Great movie, though. 

I agree, I always thought it wouldn't make sense to try to kill him before he fulfills his destiny, because unfortunately he has to come before Jesus can come back.

Great theory.

I can't wait to see how the upcoming "Damien" on A&E deals with this subject matter?

You can only gather so much from a trailer. :)

...by positing that The Catholic Church has grown so used to its own influence and its current members are so drunk on the power that they don't want the status quo upset. They don't want The Second Coming because then they won't be top dogs anymore. The church is a human institution and as flawed and corrupt as any organization or corporation potentially can be, so I thought that was kind of a smart move on the show's part.

It's a much more modern and realiatic take on the power dynamic, rather than just black & white sides being chosen.

That's always been kind of a hole in these kind of plots.

Can't you just put up with some bad times for a few years to get eternal paradise later?

Well the movie doesn't clearly define Brennan's agenda.

He may believe that bringing about end times will initiate Christ's return.

"I don't need to believe it's real. I just need to believe it."

Yeah if you don't mind living through hell on earth. Do you understand what the last days are to be like?

reply

But the end of time brings hell on earth, some believe it will be the rapture and some belief it will just be days filled with chaos, terror, destruction and pain before God returns to destroy the world. It will be filled with death, earthquakes, war = intense suffering. That is what many if not most people fear about the end of the world, which is not the end itself, but how the order of the world will be totally disrupted. They will see sights that will bring terror.

As for the 'see you in hell' muttering, I took it as the old priest could tell that Thorn was probably destined for hell (he was a politician and perhaps a corrupt one himself).
