If Robert had succeeded

*Spoilers*

Say that Robert had succeeded in killing Damien in the end.

And, not only that, but he hadn't been chased the police, hadn't been shot in the church...

What do people think would have happened to him?

I think that Gregory Peck is too sure of character to portray someone who would then commit suicide for not only having killed Damien, but for having placed himself and Kathy in that scenario in the first place.

Fake his death and live quietly somewhere?

Maybe, but unlikely.

He'd definitely live out his days in grief and torment of a kind.

But, for me, the deaths of Kathy and the other victims are far more shocking than Robert's own demise. The only surprise is that it's the Diplomatic Protection Force that kill him; the section of the Met assigned to support Emanssy staff in protecting the Ambassador.

I guess it's the way that the camera lingers on Kathy's photo by the bed during Robert's final drive home and his almost unnatural focus in getting Damien to the church on time. Sort of like he's resigned to his own fate.

I guess, if Robert had succeeded and lived, it may have been fitting for him to end in the monastery in Suboacp, serving out his penance with Spiletto.

What do you think?

If Satan had Robert killed simply for disrupting the plan, that would make him a pretty sore loser. 

But I don't get the impression it was solely Satan's plan. It seems as if the battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is like a huge game of chess, in that there are rules to follow. If God was the one who set the rules (e.g. declaring the Antichrist can only be killed by a special set of daggers laid out in a particular sequence on hallowed ground) Satan presumably had to agree with them. If Robert is a particular kind of chess piece, it would explain why Satan wasn't able to make Robert's plane crash when he was bringing the daggers to England. Or Satan just knew in advance that Robert was going to get shot by the police in a church. The novel of The Omen revealed that there had been two other unsuccessful attempts to raise the Antichrist in previous centuries.

Had Robert succeeded his life would pretty much be ruined, so suicide seems likely.

I don't think Robert would ever kill himself especially knowing the truth. But his life is certainly ruined and he wouldve lived his life in prison.

I don't think Robert would have committed suicide as word would have eventually got round that the antichrist has been defeated and Robert would have been granted the necessary protection. They could have simply blamed the death of Damien on his demented nanny, for example.
Great question though!

The Satanists would have taken revenge on him for frustrating their plans. After all, other characters who are some kind of obstruction are made to hang themselves, be impaled, pushed from a building or decapitated. I don't see Thorn walking away with a "Curses, you won this time" response.
Then they would have gone for some kind of Plan B.

"Chicken soup - with a *beep* straw."

Agreed. Even if had gotten away without the police finding out, it's clear that something's been keeping on eye on what he was doing. Even if the satanists didn't catch him, he'd have to live couped up like Pat Troughton's character to avoid any supernatural demise.
