Favorite Quotes

If you could pick your favorite quote(s) from Ode to Billy Joe, what would it be?
I have a few, but here's mine-

Billie Joe: OK, Bobbie Lee. By now your papa surely knows who I am.
Bobbie Lee: Oh, he knows who you are. He just doesn’t know what you are.
Billie Joe: That very well may be. Still, you inform your papa that I am comin’ to call.
Bobbie Lee: You don’t seem to understand, fool. My papa’s problem is not with you. His problem is with me. And the fact that I’m only…
Billy Joe: Fifteen. Yes, I know. You’re also 32, and you best start using them real quickly before they go bad and fall off. Miss Hartley, I shall arrive at your home at seven p.m. this very evening.
Bobbie Lee: You would be wise to make no such personal appearance.
Billy Joe: Seven p.m. On the nose. And you please inform your papa that I am coming to call, I would appreciate some iced tea, as befits a gentleman caller. With lemon and sugar. And a straw, if you got one.

Bobbie Lee: Billie Joe, we are making progress. Sneaking up on things, gaining ground. The plumbings in, and you're next.
Billie Joe: Oh...make it four aspirins.
Bobbie Lee: Well you should be taking encouragement from what I'm tellin' you.
Billie Joe: How can I take encouragement when I'm not allowed into your house until after the plumbing?
Bobbie Lee: Well when you consider that nothing has been allowed in our house since the piano, you'll take heart.
Billie Joe: Make that six aspirins...and an enima.
Bobbie Lee: Oh d*mn! That's Brother Taylor.
Billie Joe: But we're not doing anything.
Bobbie Lee: True, but no man can be ordeamed as a Baptist minister unless he's ready to expect the worst of his congregation.
Billie Joe: Well, let's just pretend that we're not with each other.
Bobbie Lee: You'll never fool Brother Taylor.
Billie Joe: (sarcastic)Oh, I'm just trying to protect your reputation, young lady, knowing well that in your heart, I come after the piano...(walks away and turns around)and the plumbing.

Bobbie Lee: Why is this happenin' to us?
Billie Joe: No, not us. You're fine. You're beautiful. You're ready to fly...and you're goin' to.

reply

At night in the woods...

Bobbie Lee: "I wish I could understand..."

Billie Joe: "I wish *I* could."

reply

Mine is "You're fine. You're beautiful. You're ready to fly,and you're going to" and "No matter what I say, no matter what I do, please remember that I love you" These quotes have always got me to crying when I hear Robby/Billy Joe say this because I know what he is reffering to and I just feel so sorry for him.

There isn't enough time or space to write all my favorite quotes, so I will try to control myself:
Bobbie Lee:"Nothing fortifying has passed my lips but a Pepsi Cola"
Bobbie Lee: I am not swimming upstream to mate with you Billy Joe, that's for salmon".
Becky Thompson to her mother after church on Sunday as they are speaking with James, Bobbie Lee's brother: "Momma, James has been favorin' someone else-which is his privilege"
Bobbie Lee's momma speaking to her inside the henhouse:"Sometimes when the sap gets to risin' a girl's has to count to ten" Bobbie Lee responds: "Momma, I am way past a hundred".

I could go on and on but I have some errands to run now so I'll be back!

reply

When the person above quoted the line about counting to ten it was said incorrectly. The line goes: "Sometime when the sap gets to risin', sometimes a girl has to count to ten." I just wanted to add that because I'm about as big a Ode to Billy Joe fan as you can get.

reply

"I don't think that you can be an ordained Baptist minister without first thinking the worst of your congregation."

reply

Bobbie Lee: I'm only fifteen; what do I know about the world?
