1959 Scenes - Wha?????

I'm a big fan of this movie but what has always bothered me is the early scenes that were supposed to be set in 1959 and EVERYONE had big 70's hair and sideburns, 70's suit fashion (big collars, fat ties) and 70's sunglasses. Heck, there's even a 70's car in plain view in the middle of the screen during the paddle boat sequence! Did film makers in the 70's just not care about period detail?
It was just so hard to get into the early part of the movie - I was so distracted! I kept expecting John Travolta to walk past carrying some paint cans...

Double ditto! Robertson's sideburns, aviator sunglasses and jacket were strictly mid-Seventies and Boy Scouts on boat trip would have been booted out of troop had they shown up at 1959 Scout-O-Rama with that hair length. Guess filmmakers think audiences are so stupid that if they show a few old cars, the rubes will buy anything. Unfortunately, that seems to have been the rule rather than the exception back then. Looked at The Cincinnati Kid lately? Supposed to be the depths of the Great Depression but Steve McQueen, Tuesday Weld and Ann-Marget look like they're out for a night at Whiskey A Go Go.

It wasn't just a problem in the '70s, I saw Splendor in the Grass the other night, and Natalie Wood's hair and wardrobe were strictly 1960, Beatty's hair too. That might not have been so bad if the other characters didn't have 1930 hair and clothes.

I had no idea how could I?

I don't recall at this point except certain streets in the film that were no where near the real location of the bank.

At least in TGF they made an attempt to make it look like the 40s and 50s whereas this film didn't even bother.

Also in Ben Hur, those horse racing cars were not from the days of Jesus, they belonged to two decades after the story takes place. And Charlton Heston's sandals belonged in the years 50 to 70.
