When did airbags become available. One of the police cars crashes and an airbag come out. This was made in 76, I don't remember airbags in 76. Perhaps they were only available to police at that time and not for the general public? Does anyone know when airbags hit the scene?
shareYes Oldsmobiles and other GM cars were produced with airbags between 1973 and 1976, at they time they were thought of as a gimmick and people believed they actually caused some fatalities so they were pulled from production until they were re-introduced in the 80's.

shareI was surprised at that also. I do remember discussion of air bags in the '70s, but I don't recall them being in widespread use in most cars until the '80s. Certainly it's plausible they would have been in police cars, where they were really needed.
