Is This Supposed To Be A Comedy?

Obviously Brando was doing an over the top comic performance, but the way it was edited made the film as a whole seem like a comedy.

That's a large part of the films appeal. It's extreamly funny in many spots, mostly due to Brando's brillant performance. But then it turns shockingly violent in an instant. It keeps you off balance. Witnessing a human being's violent death should never be considered "funny" in civilized society, even within the context of fiction. However, the genius and sick sense of humor Lee Clayton uses to dispatch his victims, is beyond funny. IMHO anyway. Banging another man's wife? Taking a dump? In a river? "Adios amigo". After giving someone a tutoral about seeing the Star of Bethlehem? Yikes, that's SO funny. If that's not PC, oh well.

I thought it was a comedy most of the time. But it did get pretty violent towards the end.
