Favorite moments?

When an impatient Peter Falk jumps over the counter for the milk I always crack up. Damn he's SO GREAT in this film.

I also love the scene where Cassavettes gets it on with the blond by repeatedly telling her "I love you..." while Falk waits uncomfortably in the kitchen (of a one room apartment). Then, just as you're back on Falk's side, he goes for sloppy seconds in an even more aggressive way. God, so wrong but so good... I love the way the chraracters are sympathetic one moment and despicable in the next. So tragically human.

When Cassavettes putss the bus driver in a headlock cause he wants to go out through the entrance door.

When he says to the black guym in a bar filled with blacks."That ooold black man"

When they fight, looks so funny. They slap each other, fall on their asses.

That was an incredible scene. For me, there was no coming back from "despicable" for either of them after that.

The scene in the black bar

The ending

The "breaking the watch" scene

In the graveyard when Peter Falk says "Don't you know the difference between not believing in something and showing some respect for it?"

I like the line but it isn't my favorite scene--mostly because of the film quality. That whole scene is too dark--I have difficulty making out the expressions on the faces, etc.

I think Cassavetes's paranoia and depression in the hotel scene is great--his discussion about wanting to disappear but also being afraid to. And like some have said, the constant vacillation between Mikey and Nicky as sympathetic and detestable characters is fascinating.

I'm curious--in your opinion, are there specific times in which it appears that Mikey's motivations towards Nicky are "kosher"? Times when he is honestly trying to help him survive?

reply

It did seem at times he was conflicted, and thinking about honestly helping.

Cassavetes visits the candy store.
The scene ends with the old shop keeper saying:
"I don't think they make Necco anymore."
Makes me laugh every time!

Falk jumping over the counter and flipping his *beep* on the clerk.

When Falk slips going back into the hotel.

When Falk throws money on the ground for Cassavetes, points at him and says "You're a piece a nuthin" and they start fighting.

In said fight, Cassavetes goes to smack Falk and slips and falls
right on his ass.

Everything in it is basically a favorite moment
