I'm Surprised This Message Board...

...doesn't have more posts, as this is such a great film, even with as disjointed as it (obviously) is.

An underrated gem.

I wish I could find more material (published books, etc.) that covers the troubled production of the film...

Well right now I'm looking for anything, so thanks for the heads-up on the book. I will check it out. The extras on the DVD are nice but, like you said, not nearly enough.

And what about all the extra footage May shot? It's around somewhere. Would love to see it someday.

...and i'm surprised that i haven't posted on this board before.

'mikey & nicky' is one of my favourite movies, along with 'husbands' that also starred john cassavetes and peter falk, with the added bonus of ben gazzara.

but getting back to mikey & nicky...sure, it's flawed in a lot of ways....the editing, the darkness since it was only filmed at night, and all the rest..but it is truly the bestest 'buddy' film i've ever seen.

john and peter, being real life friends, truly had the chemistry here.

all 'buddy' movies pale in comparison to this one. and yet this movie has been overlooked.

there are so many moments in this movie where i am so touched by the friendship that they share, and then i see the final 'betrayal' and it wrenches my heart. yet i can sorta understand why.
nicky was a little ass bastard who's last straw with mikey was the deal with nell, the blonde chick. mikey thought he could have 'second dips' with her, as nicky implied, but that was not going to happen.
and then the smashing of mikey's watch was the true final straw.

i think it's a great profile of a REAL friendship of two guys, especially considering what 'line of work' they were in.

and as far as the improvisation goes.....i have elaine may's script, and except for a few lines, john and peter followed it to the letter. it may seem ad-libbed, but it really wasn't.

hi, my name is carleen...i'm harmless.

I have to disagree with your analysis. Remember that Mikey - ostensibly Nicky's best friend - is sent to finger him for a mob hit. His hope is to get it over with as painlessly as possible, then head back to the safety and comfort of his home. Nicky is suspicious from the outset, but when he becomes certain of Mikey's intentions - ( the scene in the bar where Nicky keeps staring at Mikey as the latter waits for the phone to ring ) - he determines to take his old friend on the ride to Hell with him. This is what sets up the unforgettable ending.

The truth is, they're both bastards in some ways, but Mikey is the betrayer, and the fact that Nicky refuses to let Mikey escape the consequental guilt of his betrayal seems only apt.

Good analysis. I like that you note they are both bastards. Agree that Nicky figures it out and decides to take Mikey on "the ride from Hell". But why go to his house at the end then?

Desperation... Betrayal.. Or maybe wanting to say goodbye to his "friend"

Or to save his life.. When you're moments from death, you'll do anything and everything.

my ninth favorite film of all time - the best Cassavetes film that he DID NOT direct.
