'War and Remembrance' Novel
Herman Wouk's novel has an excellent depiction of the Battle of Midway. Although it's historical fiction, he did an excellent job of researching the battle and showing both American and Japanese viewpoints.
He particularly notes how brilliant was Spruance's decision not to pursue the Japanese navy after the four carriers were sunk, as it would have led him right into Yamamoto's main force. This decision was notable in that flew in the face of American doctrine that a beaten enemy must always be pursued, which was 'holy writ'.
