What flying does he do in movie, I remember it being his son only who is in combat in F4F that gets shot up and crash lands, but when I googled Heston/ Midway,there is one image of him in Navy flying gear in cockpit..

Yeah the scene you're talking about is at the end of the movie. SPOILERS: Matt Garth's plane gets shot up pretty bad and as he is trying to land his plane, he crashes right on the ship and then the plane explodes killing him.

I always wondered why he didn't bail out and ditch the plane.
