why do all the kids look like they are in their mid 20's? the kid who got blown up at his locker had a gut and looked like he was 25 years old.

As critic Danny Peary said, the film is quite "surreal". It only makes sense if you think of it as a political allegory.
(Oh, but the police *are* conducting an off-screen investigation - Mark and Theresa mention the cops think the kids who were having the three-way in the tent are responsible for the killings.)
I noticed that most of the kids walk around campus wearing long sleeve shirts and pants. Kids in Malibu didn't dress like that in the '70s! Where are the surfer t-shirts and daisy duke shorts? ;)
