Never seen this, but heard a lot so...

Is it worth seeing now? I ask because at that time maybe the story and gore were over the top, but by today's standards would it really be that much to take? Also, and more importantly, does the story and acting hold up? It seems to be a very hard to find movie for whatever reason, so again is it worth finding to watch? Thanks

One of the best suspense movies I've ever seen. It should be an 8.5, not 7.5 as imdb ranks.

Yup, agreed about the 8.5 (if not a 9.5). I remember my dad taking me to see this when it was first in the theaters, and by the end both of us were sitting there just completely exhausted, as if we'd lived through it ourselves. I've rewatched it at least once every five or so years since then (and sometimes even more often) and I've NEVER gotten tired of It. The scene where Roy Scheider fights the assassin in his hotel room while the old man in the wheelchair across the street tries to get someone to believe what he's seeing never ceases to amaze me. But then, I could say that about at least ten or fifteen other great scenes in this movie (without even mentioning the dental torture scene). I've seen lots of great thrillers, but this is still the greatest thriller I've ever seen.

I would recommend purchasing a cheap, used version of it--even on VHS if necessary! For me, the movie gets better after multiple viewings, since the plot is somewhat complex.

He who conquers himself is mightier than he who conquers a city.

I think it's held up pretty well. If it helps look at as a period piece. To me it haas a very heavy 70's feeling to it. All the pessism that people were feeling in the mid-seventies.

Its a great film that needs to be watched.
There are many detractors on this board who have come across as a immature viewer.A person looking for action and C.G.I.will not enjoy it.
You must pay attention, there is a story within the story. The sheer brutality and evil Olivier brings to the screen is so intense. You had asked if its content should come with a warning-no.This is where others are dissapointed.By todays horror suspense standards-visualy it is not blood and guts. The horror and suspense is all cerebral the director uses DIALOUGUE....
I don't want to give anything away.Just sit back,relax and enjoy-undisturbed.
Don't read any reviews and come away with your own opinion.

Your. OP was over a year ago,yet Im sure myself and others who've enjoyed the film are interested in your opinion.
Please follow through-if you've had a chance to watch it.

I finally saw it. I did enjoy it. I certainly don't think that the violence or gruesome scenes are not as bad as I have read, but in a good way. The director cuts away and leaves much to the viewers imagination. Great acting, great story and certainly the Nazi WW2 evil is evident. It is certainly a film now, that if remade, would end up being an over the top CGI movie and more action than story and that would be a shame. Thanks for all of your input.

Wow, you pretty much summed up my thoughts on the movie. Spot on, I agree about the cutting away from violence and leaving some up to imagination. Too true about if it were to be remade today.
