Best Swedish film ever?

Okay, I'm not a very big fan of Swedish film.

But this one rocks! I didn't know we could do stuff like this up here!

I'm telling you! See it, if you haven't already! There's a great Region 2 DVD out with English subtitles, if needed!

The Man from Majorca is at least as good as The Man on the Roof, but it's more unconventional (the most action at the beginning of the movie + an unsatisfying and chilling ending). It's also a thriller with no shooting or stabbing at all!

It's arguably the best Swedish police thriller ever, and on a quite different level than the slew of later Beck and Wallander movies.

You should try Let the right one in. And others. But try this one for a start.

Actually, you need to revisit this movie and realize why this is one of the best movies ever made in Sweden. There are so many directorial fine touches to be noticed that work terrifically on the psychological level. Made it very hard to watch for me the first time, so I had to go back to the movie house and see it again the next day to get over my fear. Much grittier than Dirty Harry and the other slew of Hollywood police action from the seventies.
The camera work is also exceptional. As is the acting by many but foremost Carl Gustaf Lindstedt who was until then only known as a comedy actor. His very understated performance shines throughout.
Widerberg was a very fine director, and this is his best work.

The best swedish thriller yes; but it cannot be compared with Smultronstället, Fanny och Alexander, Häxan or Körkarlen. Sweden was in the lead in 1920s. With Germany. Hollywood had not yet been dominating.
