One of the lowest rated magnum opuses in IMDb history.

Of all the films by Claude Sautet, possibly the most underrated director of the 1970s, I believe this is his finest.

And rarely have I seen a film of such high caliber get such lousy reviews on IMDb.
Most disgracefully clueless is that dbdumonteil review. He has the gall to call this "pretentious," while he flatly rejects the idea of symbolism in movies about the middle class?! What kind of bigoted snob is he who only allows symbolism for silent films about poor fisherman or whathaveyou?
I hope people aren't turning away from a possible interest in this based on a few angry nitwits like that. It would be unfortunate.

I agree.

I couldn’t find any redeeming aspect in this movie. The story was all over the place. Sautet has some great movies but unfortunately many of his movies are below average. What wonderful things some people find in this movie is beyond me.
