Hopper was great even though behind the scenes was another story

just watched the documentary Not Quite Hollywood:untold story of Oxploitation before seeing this and the director of the film and hopper himself said that he was incredibly difficult to deal with. Hopper was drunk and high on coke throughout the entire production. He would wake up and begin drinking and continue throughout the day. Hopper said it was his own journey into hell. He drove everyone crazy because he stayed in character 90% of the time even though he was half out of his mind and never broke out of the fake irish accent. He was almost set on fire and things got so bad that before they were done with the film he got himself deported for an iccident involving a car. That despite these problems his performance was so good and the film was so well done it made me respect him more as an actor because in just seeing the film you wouldnot know how hard things really are. All the pain and craziness seems to be apart of character which made all the more interesting

Very interesting post! I just watched this movie and had a feeling that Hopper wasn't in the best of shapes during this period.

Hopper was one of a kind and i salute to a great actor not with us anymore!

Difficult is an understatement. One night he chugged half a bottle of rum and started wrecking a graveyard. When the cops found him wandering the outback they told him with his blood-alcohol content he shouldn't have even been alive. And yeah great performance.

Agreed but it must have been totally bizarre on set. Hopper was after all pretty much in exile from Hollywood after the fiasco that was The Last Movie.

Sounds like the experience with Coppola on 'Apocalypse Now'. He was sort of an awkward actor, but he had a certain magnetism. To me, he was very lucky to have the career he did.
