Give it a Chance

If one goes into this movie knowing that it's garbage by comparison to 'Rosemary's Baby', it can actually be enjoyed. The plot and script are decent (despite less than perfect acting, directing, and editing), and there are plenty of interesting references to its predecessor. Ruth Gordon is still excellent as Minnie, and, I have to say, Ray Milland gave a highly convincing recreation of Roman--he even looks a lot like Sidney Blackmer. I would recommend 'LWHTRB' to any fan of 'RB' as long as they were warned in advance that Roman Polanski's skilled hand is clearly absent. Glaring questions posed by the first are answered intriguingly, so give it a chance!

But, I was disappointed with what they did to Andrew/Adrian's character. I expected him to be some big-bad and he's mostly like a conflicted teenager. The worst thing he does is act like some bad-ass rock musician. I guess the internal-conflict thing they have him experiencing was a really interesting thing to do to that character only he never does anything truly horrifying. He seems to feel guilt about who he is but I can't see why because he never does anything truly evil. I just think if they decided to go with the internal-conflict thing, they should have made the good vs. evil thing in him more sharply defined--but then, it was a 70's made-for-tv movie that they probably didn't have much of a free hand in making. I also felt that Roman and Minnie's intentions were kind of obscure. I couldn't figure out exactly what it was they were trying to accomplish.

I did give it a chance but I didn't like it much at all. I usually have a high tolerance for poor sequels and usually stand up for them as being misunderstood, but I can't stand up for this one. It started out good but it quickly went downhill. I think the whole movie should've been about Adrian/Andrew as a baby with Rosemary traveling across the country to try to escape and take her son away from the coven with them in pursuit. Sort of like Race With the Devil but only with the son of Satan thrown into the mix. That would've been interesting to watch and far more believable than Adrian's convoluted future but I guess it's too late now.

I unfortunately took the opposite approach: I set my sights very high knowing this was a sequel to one of the finest horror films of the '60s. I wish I could say I was impressed, but I found this just plain boring most of the time. It does have a few moments of visual flair, however, and the cast for the most part is very impressive. 4/10 stars from me.
