Original Puppets vs. Sequel

Apparently puppets made for Rankin/Bass specials were of materials which quickly broke down and few if any have survived. I was wondering why puppets used in The Little Drummer Boy and The Year Without a Santa Claus were not used when sequels to those were made. I can see why those in the second movie may perhaps have been given a makeover, but pictures I've seen from The Little Drummer Boy Book II show a puppet with zippo personality and appeal compared to the original. The program is said to be otherwise very good and was the only one of these specials to be nominated for an Emmy. Perhaps some CGI Deepfake type thing could be done to the film to make the puppets more like the original or even a total remake and this program would gain popularity.
