How could Mariel Hemingway not know she was being raped

In the trivia section it says that Mariel Hemingway didn't realize her character had been raped, until she saw the finished film.

How could she not have known that? I haven't seen this film, but did they actually film any scenes of her being raped? Does she even say the words "rape" or "raped"?

Probably editing. From what I remember at first there was a close up of him putting a mic close to her chest shortly after she walked into his studio (more than likely a double during the close up), then a lengthy chase scene occurs, and then when he finally catches up to her, he then rips off part of her overalls. Then the next scene you see is her collapsing down a flight of stairs as the older sister is modeling. Older sister then ask what happened, Mariel's character then makes up a lame excuse that she just had to just go pee (wtf)and older sister goes nuts and that's about it.

Maybe when it was filming Mariel might have been told that she was only getting roughed up instead of her character actually being raped. I guess...

I think it could be done if they tricked her into thinking she was being killed in the end of the film, not raped.

They probably told her she was just being beaten up, because it would be traumatic if she were told she was being raped. And there was no internet back then, so she couldn't easily find out the information. She was young and didn't know any better.

The trivia section also suggests that Mariel didn't know her sister's character had been raped, either. Considering the entire trial was about a rape, and her character gives a definition of what rape is during the trial, I can't possibly see how it could be true.

Not really; there are ways that the filmmakers protect young actors from understanding what is really happening. For instance Mariel didn't actually "see" her sister being raped. It's all an editing illusion. In the trial she yells that her sister "was being raped" but from the way she said it I van imagine that she was just reciting a line without really knowing what the word "rape" even meant. She seemed very innocent, and protected during that film. I believe she didn't understand what the movie was really about..

Mariel wasn't raped on screen. It was only implied; after Chris Sarandon pushes her to the floor he rips her clothing and the scene cuts away; She was very young at the time, and filming an actual on screen rape scene with her would have been completely impossible. I guess they didn't explain to her what was being implied, but it is filmed in a way that the audience knows that she was raped..
