I don't see what's so bad about The Last Tycoon?

I thought it was alright. No, not a masterpiece. It had several flaws. My full review is here: http://www.everyeliakazanmovie.blogspot.ca/2013/01/the-last-tycoon-1976.html

What did you think?

I can get how some people find it fairly melodramatic... but that's about it. It is very decent!

I didn't think Ingrid Boulting was too good. The review is here: http://www.everyeliakazanmovie.blogspot.ca/2013/01/the-last-tycoon-1976.html

I found her performance to be a little overly melodramatic for my liking.

I really liked her, and found her captivating. I read your review and found it enlightening and insightful. Maybe she lacked some complexity, but this is what I found what attracted Monroe Starr to her.

Plus she was beautiful.

I want to like this movie. Great cast and I love F Scott Fitzgerald. There are several memorable scenes but they just don't add up to a great movie.

Not a great movie but I found it strangely dreamlike in its pacing, the unreality and artificiality of the unfinished house on the beach, and I liked some of the subtle humor at the screenings with Monroe. Nor I, you.

I liked it. The slow pace is comparable to European films of the 1970s. We know who the characters are and what they seek. The ending feels ambiguous, which is appropriate because the novel was unfinished. The film is worth seeing for the cast alone, plus Fitzgerald, Pinter & Kazan.

The movie is great and has a great cast up until Boulting shows up. Then it becomes unwatchable. The other thing that really drags this movie down is the horrendous music. It just doesn't stop. Even when DeNiro is alone in his room doing whatever, it just drones on and on. One of the very few movies I have ever turned off before it finished. What a shame too, because it had so much potential in the first half.

give me a stage where this bull here can rage and though I can fight I'd much rather recite.

Has anyone watched the TV series? Is it better than this?
