the novel

I've read the novel and liked it very much. Thompson can certainly write. I'm going to try to rent the DVD, if BBuster has it. I would guess it had to be toned down somewhat for the screen, because some of the violent scenes are so blunt and graphic in the book, filming them literally would set the morality police screaming.

i hated the novel. i cannot believe this is considered to be one of the greatest crime fiction novels of all time. i am open to rereading this.

I'd love to be able to track down this earlier version with Keach as Ford, but the more recent adaptation with Affleck as Ford, yes, some very brutal stuff, and Casey Affleck rewards the viewer with his very chilling, charming portrayal of an absolute psychopath. All things Thompson. I had read the book years ago, as well as quite a few other novels by Jim Thompson.
