Loved Movie Always Hated Girls Voice

As a kid, I saw this on showtime in late 70's and between that and Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. forever changes my perception of animated film. But, even as a child I hated that Jack's voice was obviously done by a girl. The Japanese version sounds like a boy, why couldn't American voice over follow suit? I have to say getting the DVD and seeing that this was a Japanese production explains a lot about how trippy this movie was.
