Steiner's Medals

One of my favorite scenes is this:

As an officer at the hospital notes, "has been highly decorated." His awards: the Iron Cross 2nd Class, Iron Cross 1st Class (rarely awarded to enlisted men), the Silver Wound Badge (3 separate times wounded), the Infantry Assault Badge (combat in 3 separate battles) and the rare Gold Close Combat Bar.

I'm of two minds re: the Close Combat Bar - IIRC, just 412 were awarded in gold. It could be bronze, which is still quite respectable. Buffed bronze can be mistaken for gold.

I would say it was bronze at that time of the war

According to Durante book's there is at least 633 recipients of the Gold CCC probably more with chaos of war by 1945

Nevertheless a very impressive and correct medal collection for Steiner and also one of my favourite scenes in a top movie

You forgot to mention the Kubanschild and the Russian front Medal the Close Combat Badge in Gold was only awarded 36,000 times out of 9M serving in all branched of the Wehrmacht during the war.

A German soldier or officer in the Normandy fighting jumped over a hedgerow and there were some Americans there he did not expect. He jumped back over and ran, escaping. He was awarded the Close Combat clasp (probably bronze) for being close enough to look the enemy in the face under combat conditions, although he did not actually fight them.

The general in the scene has no medals at all, which is unrealistic even for a general with only administrative experience. He probably would have had some kind of decoration, even if not a combat one.

The Eastern Front medal, with a red ribbon, was a very common award. Even Triebig's batman is wearing one. It was first brought in after the unpleasant winter of 1941-2, and was nicknamed "the order of the frozen meat" (Gefrierfleischorden) by German soldiers.
