Alternate version?? *spoilers*

*spoilers*

I saw this film again today, and unless I am mistaken.... it seemed to me that the part where Julia and/or Olivia kills Julia's husband was gone from the film!

Anyone else seen this version?

In an old number of "Films Illustrated" (volume 6 number 72,August 1977),the director Richard Loncraine says that he cut some little bits of the film after the first worldwide screening at the Cannes Film Market in May 1977!

Here's what the reviewer of the article says:

SPOILERS

"These adjustements, which to my mind can only be beneficial, include the cutting of a superfluous bedroom scene between Mia Farrow and Tom Conti, the shortening of one death scene (the character played by Cathleen Nesbitt) and the clarification of another (the Keir Dullea character)"

I also remember reading in another cinema magazine (about the first screening of the film in Cannes) that we didn't know what happen to the Keir Dullea character!
Maybe that the director wasn't showing Magnus entering in Julia's house (or the basement?) and dying, who knows?

I'd like to see these "deleted scenes" on a dvd!

reply

ok,so what happens to Magnus's character if you don't see him dying in the basement of Julia's house???
Did you see the scene when Magnus enters in Julia's house??

reply

No, you don't see Magnus enter Julia's house. You never see him again, if i remember correctly, after his sister berates him for 'losing' Julia.
I was really surprised that they "dropped" Magnus's character so soon. It made the film seem chopped up a bit.
That and the scene in the original film: Where Julia goes to the mental hospital without her friend.
He made such a big deal about going with her, and then she just drives off without him??
I mean, she probably called him and got no answer. That would seem suspicious to me.

It just seemed....wrong in the film.

i think that the US edit of the film,THE HAUNTING OF JULIA,is slightly cut!
Fiatlux, you've just seen the first "cut" of FULL CIRCLE,which was screened in Cannes 1977!
In this first cut,you didn't see what happen to Magnus's character!
Then Loncraine choose to show Magnus's scene in the house, and his death.

I'd love to see these "deleted" scenes on a dvd...there was also a (superfluous) bedroom scene between Julia and Mark that Loncraine cut after the Cannes 77 screening.

Fiatlux, did you see the bedroom scene in THE HAUNTING OF JULIA??

I love the Magnus's scene in the house and basement but maybe that the director was right to cut this scene because it is not so ambiguous...i mean, you briefly SEE/SPOT the ghost, just before Magnus falling to his death!!

I think that Julia didn't really care if Mark was going with or without her at the hospital...i mean,Julia was really obssessed, focused on the story of Olivia, she could drive at the hospital without Mark!!

And you forgot...Julia or the the possessed Julia probably killed Mark,so it's logical that Julia didn't care to go to the hospital with Mark!

I can't believe they cut that scene. It's one of the scariest moments in the movie! I saw it again recently and the scene was intact. I agree that showing the back of Olivia's head kind of spoiled the ambiguity, though.

God, I love that movie...

reply

Wait a minute! They show the back of Olivia's head in Magnus' death scene?! At exactly what point? I never knew that and I love this movie! Maybe it's because of the crappy old pan and scan version I have...

reply

Do you have the awful french DVD edition? From what I hear they butchered it, creating a false widescreen from a freaking pan and scan video transfer!!! I can only imagine the scope of the disaster since this is the kind of movie where crucial information is often shown at one end of the screen or the other (like ***SPOILER*** Olivia appearing to Julia in the bathroom mirror right before the climax ***END OF SPOILER***)

If that is the case, I wouldn't be surprised that you missed Olivia's head in the cellar scene. If I remember correctly, when Magnus comes down, I think you see at one point a very fleeting image of a silhouette with golden hair fleeing across the screen. Later, on the far right or far left of the screen, you can distinctly see a strand of long golden wavy hair like Olivia's - making it clear someone is standing still in the shadows , hidden from Magnus' POV. Moments later... ****SPOILER AGAIN**** Magnus is startled by something he sees coming from that direction, slips, falls and opens his neck on a piece of broken glass. And that creepy music plays as the blood runs down on the floor... I've had that damn soundtrack for 30 years and everytime I hear that piece ("Magnus or The Unwelcome Intrusion") I feel like *beep* my pants.

reply

Just as an aside...

*beep* my pants! *beep* my pants! *beep* my pants! *beep* my pants! *beep* my *beep* pants!

No I ain't cracking up. I just discovered that Imdb automatically *beeps* you when you write about *beep* Apparently Imdb feels readers can put up with racism, bigotry and plain stupidity but God forbid their sensibility should be offended by the word *beep*

Sorry for the rant. I just had to.

reply

No, I thank God I don't have the french DVD. I have Comcast so Full Circle (under "The Haunting of Julia") was on FEARnet in November with improved picture quality and pan and scan so I was like hell ya and recorded it! I do remember seeing the streak of blonde float across the screen but that's it. Probably cause it's still pan and scan and it doesn't even SHOW the far left/right of the screen. Anyway, yeah. that scene is EXTREMELY creepy!

Oh and yeah the "beep" thing is pretty annoying haha!

Are you sure this ain't a spider web strand you are seeing? A good friend of mine made me a ltbx 2.35:1 print and I've rewound the scene about 10 times, and still don't see what you are talking about..Now I most definitely saw Olivia run across the screen after Magnus' first stumble but I can't for the life of me find this particular scene you are talking about..Loncraine's camera slowly creeps around the back of Magnus (indicating Olivia's pov) before Olivia kills him..That's all I see in this particualr moment.

reply

where the hell did your friend get you a 2:35:1 print? Did he have access to an actual 35mm and had it transferred? Would love a copy

reply

The 2.35:1 version I have is from a rare French TV showing. It is in english language with French subs but the subs are down at the bottom part of the screen and do not interfere with the actual picture presentation.. And it is true 2.35:1, not cropped in any way.. Those dvds released a few years back were
fake widescreen.. The French TV print (which is also fully 100% uncut) is the only scope 2.35:1 print out there until somebody hopefully reissues it someday..

reply

so how can I go about getting a copy of this from you? Shoot me over a PM if you want to work something out

reply

If you've seen a version that doesn't have the death of Julia's husband, it must have been restored now. I saw it tonight On Demand. It was very gripping and frightening - edge of the seat thing. However, it was then that I was suspecting who, but not why.

No, I have not seen that version but I hope when the DVD finally does comes out, they omit the Magnus death scene. It is the only scene where Olivia has obvious influence over objects- namely, the side-door lock, and the basement light switch. It would have corresponded more closely with the things that caused the other deaths if the things that caused the death of Magnus were equally ambiguous.

This scene could have been more befitting if, for example, Magnus had entered through the window that Julia had earlier in the film (leaving the window open), and then, after slipping in the basement, the basement door slams shuts (from the wind of the open window) with enough force as to cause the filament in the old bulb to burn out (i.e. no sound of a light switch) this would have been appropriately ambiguous. But of course, we can't go back in time, so the next best thing is to omit, or at least provide the option of the alternate version.
