Is it the 1st indie film or just one of the earliest?

I saw a documentary on the history of independent films & Harlan County, U.S.A. was the first film mentioned regarding the earliest indie films but is it the 1st or were there others that predated it? I know Grey Gardens is one of the earliest.

"Independent films" have technically been being made since the early days of the cinema. There is lots of history on indie filmmaking out there on the net. Cassavetes is usually heralded as the father of American indie filmmaking, although certainly wasn't the first to make an indie.
Indie filmmaking really started to take off though after WWII with the invention of fairly lightweight and portable film cameras. Fireworks (1947) and Little Fugitive (1953) are two of the early "indie films" to find success.

Definitely 200% without a doubt the first indie film. I saw it in a documentary. It's not even an arguable point. And don't throw Mencken in my face, I'll never forget all those terrible things he said about William Jennings Bryan.

President Obama told me it was the first indie film. Are you calling the president a liar?
