Does anyone know what kind of response the movie received when it was originally released? I know it won an Oscar but was it controversial? Was it a big deal? I never heard of it till I saw it on IFC recently. I thought the movie was fantastic. It's a real eye opener.
shareThe movie got a fair amount of notice when it came out and played in a lot of art houses and on campuses all over the country. Nothing huge, but it did get noticed. There has always been a modest market for current documentaries. And by modest I mean probably not enough to get your money back, but enough to get some of it back. This movie has almost certainly made money over time, but not very much. I met Barb Kopple about a decade ago and the car she was driving looked a lot more like one you'd see in front of a miner's home than in front of the company boss's place.
