How about a home video release?

This was a very entertaining film about Houdini. Perhaps not as well known as the George Pal-produced version starring Tony Curtis, this made for TV film was still a wonderful look at the legendary performer.

I actually consider this film superior to the Tony Curtis film. I wish it was available on DVD. I believe there was a German vhs release.

I agree. The Tony Curtis/Janet Leigh version wasn't even genuinely in period, with the look and feel of the 1950s (or the 1910s-1920s half-heartedly mounted in the 1950s). This one was much better mounted production. The only "flaw" (if you regard it as such) was that his stage career is sidelined in favor of examining his obsession with spiritualism, and Bess is depicted as equally obsessed with contacting him after his death (something she didn't really spend a lot of time on in real life). The climax, while it really pulls the heartstrings, also isn't entirely accurate, since Bess claimed that she and Ford were not successful in contacting Houdini. But it's great melodramatic made-for-tv fun, otherwise. Definitely should have had some kind of video release by now.

Yes, I bought a DVD transfer of this movie--had remembered it from when I was a kid. Just watched it tonight and was really surprised at how well it holds up. Highlights are definitely Vivian Vance (Ethel Mertz) as the wisecracking nurse and Ruth Gordon is fantastic as usual. There are some silly moments and way too much on Harry being depressed over his mother's death, but still a great little movie. Found it on an Internet search.
