Production values (lack of) ruined this one.

Will post to the comments section, but putting it in here too in case anyone wants to comment.

This could have been a REALLY good and memorable western. What killed this movie, IMHO, were the production values.
The Cameraman(men) weren't qualified to take souvenir pictures at Disneyland, the cinematography was BAD, really BAD, jerky shots, too wide an angle, sudden (just got my camcorder) zooms in and out.
I wouldn't let the soundmen and Foley "artists" adjust the volume on my AM radio! The sound was HORRIBLE, terribly done. The dubbing even sounded awful, like it was done in public toilet somewhere instead of a sound studio. The sound effects were even worse, watch the scene where the boy is walking out of the church, near the end, when he's walking it sounds just like a horse clopping along, not a human walking.
This was a Golan-Globis production, they were known at the time for cutting corners to save money, and it shows in this one.
This is really a shame though, because this film has VERY good actors in it (OK some VERY bad ones too.) This movie proves that no matter how good, or how professional the actors are, they alone cannot carry an entire movie. This movie also shows that a good story can be ruined by bad execution. While I am FAR from a movie scholar, I think this movie should be shown to all students interested in film; there is a lot more to be learned from a movie like this than from movies where everything comes together.
All in all the movie was watchable, and the most compelling reason I could give anyone for watching it is, that you'll appreciate movies with higher production standards much more than you do now.

You make my point for me...can you imagine what this movie could have been with decent production values? It would be in the top 10 (well, maybe top 20) Westerns of all time.

Coldscribe, while I don't think this was the worst western I have ever seen
(jessie james meets Frankenstein). I would have to say it is far from being in the top 20 !
I would like to see your all time top 20 western films ?

I agree the sound and the dubbing was just plain terrible !

Ah, thank you uhriaheap69! It seems that my initial comment, long ago, may have raised the hackles of those that like this film. My intention when making this comment was not lost on you, this could have been a memorable Western (although no where near Searchers et. al.) but memorable none the least, if not for the damnable way it was treated by post production. I stand behind what I said, if this had been picked up by anyone except the penny pinching can't see beyond todays expenses production company, it may have been in the top 20 Westerns, maybe in the top 10 modern Westerns. But, alas, beyond anything this lowly IMDB contributor can understand, Golan Globis threw all their eggs, and all their cash into the failed attempt at a pirate movie, one of the biggest failures in Hollyweird history, "Cutthrout Island." If they had dedicated even 10% of what they blew on "Cutthroat Island" to this, it would have been a money maker, and discussed quite a bit more than it is here.

The sound and dubbing were distractingly bad. It's hard for me to generate any interest in a film that is so sloppily made. The cast deserved better than this – and so did the viewer.

Cannon Films (Golan&Globus) did not finance CUTTHROAT ISLAND, Cobram.

This film was poorly financed and plagued by money problems during production. Richard Boone left before it was completed because he realised he wasn't going to be paid his contracted fee. No one in their right mind works without payment.

From what's been published about the production and finance problems, that it was finished at all was a miracle.

This was pretty much the story of every Golan-Globis production at the time.

Richard Boone,Jack Palance,Lee Van Cleef were over the hill when they attempted to "act" in this movie. I had to laugh at the silly stupid script.I still don't get it. They stole the music and sound effects from the spaghetti westerns that Clint Eastwood apperared in.Golan-Globus production. Jewish Cowboys? Everyone had a differnt accent. Israeli accents, Italian accents,French accents.dubbed in accents.Richard Boone never spoke a word in the movie.I heard he quit because he didn't get paid. Leif Garritt looks like he belongs in a surfing movie.Terrible casting, acting, directing, cinematography. What else can you say about this movie.I watched this movie as long as possible I had to turn it off it made me throw up. Actually it made me laugh because it was so bad that its good. They changed the Title to "Gods Gun" what a nerve using Gods name in Vain.
